The Universe is like a mirror. Smile and it will smile back. Share on X
The Cosmos, a Mirror vast and clear,
Reflects our Joy, our Hope, our Fear.
Offer your Smile, genuine and bright,
Behold, it returns, an echo of Light.
— OLW
There is a splendidly infinite cosmos out there, a universe that we can only attempt to comprehend in our all too human way, much like trying to capture the beauty of a diamond with mere words. The universe, it is said, is like a mirror — a breathtaking metaphor with a grain of exquisite truth that embraces the deep connection we share with the world beyond.
A mirror reflects, without bias or judgment, what stands before it. It neither discriminates nor favors. It simply offers back to the viewer a picture of their own reality. So too does the universe, in its grandeur, reflect the energies we emanate. We are, each of us, a microcosm of the cosmos, a tiny yet integral part of an enormous tableau, and the energies we send forth ripple across the universe like pebbles thrown into an endless ocean. Our laughter, our joy, our grief, and our hope are not unnoticed, not ignored, but reflected back to us in the patterns of our existence.
Now, I’ve heard it said, and you may have too, that the Universe is like a mirror. At first blush, it sounds like a phrase more at home in a poetry book than in the real world, doesn’t it? But, the more you chew on it, the more it starts to make a sort of peculiar sense.
You see, a mirror ain’t in the business of putting on airs or telling tall tales. It just goes about its business, reflecting back exactly what’s put in front of it, warts and all. And the Universe, vast and mysterious as it is, seems to operate in much the same fashion. It doesn’t pick favorites or pass judgment. It just takes whatever energy we’re putting out there – good, bad, or indifferent – and sends it back our way.
Now imagine, if you will, sending a smile out into that grand ol’ Universe. Not a polite, teeth-baring, in-law-pleasing grin, but a real, heartfelt smile, brimming with joy, and optimism. Well, in its own cosmic way, the Universe takes that smile and reflects it right back at you.
Don’t misunderstand me, this ain’t a promise of a life full of sunshine and daisies. We all know life’s got a way of pitching curveballs when we least expect ’em. But it does suggest that if we make a habit of facing life with a positive outlook – a ‘smile,’ so to speak – we’re more likely to see the good, even in difficult times.
So, next time you’re staring up at the star-strewn sky on a clear night, consider offering the Universe a smile. And remember, no matter how dark the night may seem, those stars twinkling back at you might just be the Universe’s way of smiling back. Now ain’t that a comforting thought?
