Everyone has something they are good at, whether it be an artistic talent, technical skill, or physical ability. If we’re lucky our professional career makes use of our talents.
In some professions, when we start out on our career path we may offer our services for free or at a deep discount in order to start building a portfolio or work history. As we gain experience and expertise, we can hopefully sell our services and get paid for our work.
But what do you do when you’ve paid your dues and developed a strong work history, yet you are still being asked to donate your time and effort by doing certain projects for free. Do you say no? Yes? Where’s the line?
Do we ever get to a point where we don’t need to give our services away for free? Where’s the balance between earning a living and ‘giving back’ to the community?
My grandfather once told me that it’s okay to get something out of being charitable. It’s okay to help someone out just because it makes us feel good, or could possibly benefit us down the road. It shouldn’t necessarily be the reason for your good deed and doing good for others shouldn’t only be done for selfish reasons, but it’s okay to get something out of being generous.
This daily meditation encourages us to be giving of our time and resources. We can do this in any number of ways, although our ability to do so is often times dictated by our current life situation. But in general I don’t think you’re ever too busy to lend a hand to someone in need. It’s never too late to stop giving to others, because whether or not we get something in return, sometimes feeling good about charitable actions is all the reward we need.
